ABSTRACT
The emblem of the Snowdonia National Park is the arctic-alpine Snowdon lily Lloydia serotina, and this refugee from the arctic is found nowhere else in Britain. But the Welsh name for these hills is Eryri, the place of eagles. To the modern mind, an eagle, however spectacular, is just another species, but to the older culture of these hills, it held a special meaning: it represented visionary power. Eagles were eradicated in North Wales in the 16th century.
