ABSTRACT

The major product of the agriculture sector is, of course, food, and an environmentally sound agricultural production system is a prerequisite for an environmentally sound food industry overall. It therefore makes sense to consider environmental management in the food industry in terms of the supply chain – that is, all those activities that contribute to the production of primary food products, and their processing, distribution and retailing. In generic terms these activities are common to wider economic sectors such as manufacturing and retailing, but in this case the products concerned simply happen to be food.
