ABSTRACT
The positive environmental impact of EMS stems mainly from the fact that a systematic and comprehensive approach to environmental management leads to the discovery and exploitation of new ‘win–win’ potential (Steger, 2000). In this chapter the basic frameworks of EMSs are discussed. This includes a discussion of audits, impact and aspects assessments, keeping abreast of legislative requirements, the resource commitment required and the mechanisms needed to ensure continuous improvement.
