ABSTRACT

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of manure is a technique that has been applied for several decades. Whereas the first AD installations experienced various technical difficulties, nowadays it is considered to be a technically proven and commercially attractive way to produce renewable energy. The advantages of biogas plants are manifold:

economically attractive investment

easily operated and safe installation (no technical background required)

production of renewable electricity and heat, resulting in a reduction of CO2 emissions

reduction of methane emissions from manure storage

improvement of the fertilizing qualities of manure.
