ABSTRACT
Issues of land management often arise in conservation. This chapter introduces some aspects of the ways in which people manage plants using physical, chemical and biological means, set within the broader context of wider systems of land management and ways of living. The role of plants in providing food is so fundamental that there is a close connection between the ways in which societies manage plants for food and the ways in which societies, as a whole, are organized.
