ABSTRACT

Social barriers to project development fall into a variety of categories. The most issues arise when there is resistance to a project by the country’s citizens. Sometimes these conflicts arise because locals want revenues or other benefits from the project owners in exchange for permission to develop. Other times, problems result when the project is not incorporated into the community in a way that is equitable and sustainable. These issues in general, as well as examples from two of the most controversial projects, landfill gas capture and hydro development, will be described.
