Analysing the Problem

The previous chapter focused on the prevalence of violence and argued for a reframing of the problems of community safety, violence and crime, using a gendered approach that encompasses violence in both the public and private spheres. In this chapter, we turn our attention to redefining the root causes of these problems and the resources that exist to address these causes. The emphasis is on links between forms of violence; the health, social and economic impacts of violence; the risk factors of becoming a victim and/or a perpetrator of violence; and the resilience factors that help to prevent initial victimization (primary prevention) and re-victimization (secondary and tertiary prevention).
