ABSTRACT

With Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and African countries given their own chapters within the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI), Chapter IX addresses the priorities of the following UN regions: Latin America and the Caribbean; Asia and the Pacific; West Asia; and the Economic Commission for Europe, which includes North America. Of course, these regions exhibit startling differences in all three pillars of sustainable development. Chapters VII to IX are a recognition of this diversity and reflect a growing concern to strengthen regional and sub-regional responses to sustainable development. The JPOI reflects a number of regionally agreed strategies and priorities. Experience gained through the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) preparatory process, and the preparation of participatory national strategies for sustainable development, should further support the policy cohesion and coordination that is called for in the JPOI.
