ABSTRACT

Achieving environmental sustainability depends on successfully implementing the recommendations described in chapters 4 and 5. This poses a tremendous challenge, particularly in developing countries. Like gender equality, environmental sustainability cuts across line ministries, fields of knowledge, and geographical scales. Only an integrated approach to aligning sector policies and investment strategies with environmental objectives can yield the desired outcomes. Such an approach requires strong political will and a detailed understanding of the complex links between economic activity and the environment. It also necessitates intensive cooperation and coordination among diverse stakeholder groups, mobilization of a variety of technical expertise, and a long-term perspective. These challenges have rarely been met in developed or developing countries.
