As the world responded, humanitarianism quickly became a popular cause and the status of aid workers rose high. People in towns and villages all over the UK organized fundraising events. The whole world joined in simultaneous pop concerts to express their compassion. Money poured into aid agencies as never before. People demanded that their governments should help, and ministers nodded apologetically. For a brief time the aid agencies seemed to rule the world. Having lived and worked through that period, I feel a deep satisfaction; but is it really justified? Reflection now makes me wonder whether we were all, aid workers and public alike, hiding from the truth.
