ABSTRACT

Repeatedly, throughout this book, we will encounter the problem that key terms are contested. The well-considered definition of core concepts is an indispensable part of a scientific study. Nevertheless, some scientists neglect it. They spend only a few lines on justifying why they define their core concepts the way they do. The definition process is then somewhat like a black box. It takes place spontaneously, and not on the basis of intelligible criteria. Instead, this study takes a closer look at the whole object of definitions in science. 1 Among others, the terms ‘generation’, ‘justice’, ‘future’, ‘well-being’, ‘happiness’ and ‘needs’ are defined, so clear criteria will be needed.
