ABSTRACT

The forests of Canada and the United States cover 613 million hectares, or nearly 16 per cent of the world’s total forest area. They are divided almost evenly between the two countries, making Canada and the US the third and fourth most forest-endowed countries worldwide (FAO, 2007). In Canada, boreal forests account for 76 per cent of forest area and the remaining 24 per cent are temperate. In the US about 48 per cent of forests are classified as temperate, 37 per cent as subtropical and 15 per cent as boreal (FAO, 2003).
