ABSTRACT

The conventional view is that all public transport has relatively low emissions. Thisbelief has considerable truth, but is not a wholly reliable guide to action. A decisiontoday to take the coach rather than drive to London from Birmingham has undeniably positive effects; but across all buses and trains, carbon emissions are more substantial than one imagines. Nevertheless, most people travel very little on public transport. The typical individual accounts for about 35kg of carbon dioxide emissions from rail services, and about the same from bus and coach travel compared to over 1 tonne from car travel.
