ABSTRACT

Having outlined the possibilities inherent in the term ‘sustainable urban development’ in Chapter 2, this chapter discusses the dynamic processes by which such development is generated, in particular, drawing attention to the role of market structures. This provides the background for Chapters 4 and 5, which discuss the processes of governing and how they seek to change and shape urban development. Understanding these processes helps one to understand the potential for and limits on producing sustainable urban development and this forms the basis of the discussion in Chapters 6 to 9.
