ABSTRACT
Climate change is raising the risks of potentially disastrous impacts and the world is at the brink of losing any realistic chance of avoiding them. The US and the rest of the world face an environmental challenge more far-reaching and more critical than any other in the course of civilization. During this century we may well irretrievably change our world for the worse. This is the unavoidable implication of an enormous scientific research effort.
