ABSTRACT
Any attempt to understand how the microclimate of the built environment differs from that of the rural surroundings must start with an analysis of differences in their surface energy balance (SEB). This chapter introduces the basic equation describing the energy exchange that takes place at the surface, and deals in detail with each of its components, with special emphasis on how the built environment affects them.
