ABSTRACT

This chapter will discuss the application of strategies to control solar access and air-flow in urban areas, and will examine the effect that building and paving materials have on the microclimate of adjacent urban spaces. Although vegetation may be used to modify both solar access and air-flow, the complex nature of its interaction with the microclimate of urban spaces warrants separate and detailed analysis. This will be provided in Chapter 9. Finally, although some of the discussion in this chapter applies primarily to urban street canyons, a more detailed discussion of the design of these prototypical urban spaces will be presented in Chapter 10.
