ABSTRACT

When Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises was first published in 2005, the hope was that it would stimulate worldwide research and protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises – the cetaceans. As the first detailed investigation into the status, process and potential of instituting cetacean habitat protection, I thought that the book was sure to attract researchers, local communities, government and industry, and get them to jump on board. They could not help but see that this synthesis of cetaceans and protected areas was long awaited and that protection was urgently needed!
