ABSTRACT

Since the original Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises was published in 2005, I am pleased to say that the number of MPAs and PAs with cetacean habitat has increased by more than one and a half times. From some 358 protected areas with cetacean habitat in 2005, there are now, in 2011, 570, 53 of which are proposed for expansion, plus 138 newly proposed, and the number grows by the year (Table E.1). The number of high seas MPAs has increased from 1 to 5 and the proposals from 7 to 27. The worldwide total of all MPAs with cetaceans as of 2011, including the high seas MPAs, is 740 proposed or existing MPAs, compared to 542 in 2004.
