ABSTRACT

In the scholarly literature on long-term assessment, foresight is usually distinguished from forecasting (see, for example, van der Duin, 2006; van der Steen, 2009). In such literature forecasting is portrayed as the attempt to predict the future. Foresight, on the other hand, is presented as the attempt to explore the future. In this book we will, for that reason, also refer to forecasting as the predictive style of assessing the future and foresight as the exploratory style.
