Germany: unification and contradiction Joachim Schleich, Regina Betz, Frank Gagelmann, Eberhard Jochem and Dirk Koewener

The German electricity market is by far the largest in the EU with the power sector producing around one-fifth of total EU demand. The power sector is heavily dependent on coal and other solid fossil fuels, but also has a large share of nuclear production. Consequently, the German power sector accounts for a large share of EU emissions: 35% of all those from the EU electricity sector, and nearly 10% of all EU CO2 emissions.
