ABSTRACT

Against a background of concern over poverty reduction, energy security and climate change, the transfer of renewable energy technology to developing countries is of interest to many organizations all over the world. Renewable energy has a key role to play not only in addressing emissions targets nationally and globally, but also in accessing local energy sources which can help facilitate sustainable development and meet international development targets. If the benefits it offers are to be maximized, renewable energy needs to be an integral part of national strategies for sustainable development (NSSD), poverty reduction strategy papers (PRSP) and any other development plans and targets. Renewable energy systems can provide electricity to remote rural populations that would not otherwise have access to it, providing energy services for homes, schools, and community and health centres. Renewable energy can also be a source of heat and mechanical power, providing a full range of services for households, communities, agriculture and small enterprises.
