ABSTRACT

The rather ugly word obesogenic has been coined to describe the modern lifestyles and behaviours that result in a person becoming too fat. The calorie equation is straightforward – more taken in than expended = weight gain. Obesogenic describes the environment – physical, social and psychological that influences the overconsumption of calories: the hours in front of a TV or computer screen; the loss of cooking skills and the social benefits of a shared meal table; ‘comfort’ eating as compensation for disappointments.
