ABSTRACT

In the three chapters of this first section, I’ve tried to give you a different way of thinking about the symptoms of unsustainable development and how we have, collectively and personally, lost sight of the laws of right behaviour that should govern our relationship with the rest of life on Earth. As a consequence, we have ‘permitted’ the way we go about our business to take a course that means its success depends on inflicting damage to the environment and to people. Now we have a once in a lifetime chance to put things right. While the misery it has caused to so many innocent people is deeply regrettable, the massive failure of our financial system removes one of the greatest obstacles to sustainable development – the lack of space and the opportunity to imagine how the human economy might work differently.
