ABSTRACT

In the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela, a tribal group known as theWarao have been living in or adjacent to the mangroves for some 7000 years. Their name translates to ‘boat people’ – living among mangroves, boat travel is the most effective means of transport. They live in small houses built on stilts sometimes directly over the water. While some horticulture is practised, their protein is largely derived from fish and crabs. In many ways theWarao are a mangrove people.
