ABSTRACT

South-East Asia hosts one third of the world's mangroves by area, more than any other region, as a result of its ideal climatic conditions and extensive coastlines. Most of the region is humid, with high rainfall, seasonally or year-round. There are numerous rivers providing freshwater and sediments to large and active deltas from the Ayeyarwady in Myanmar, to the Mekong in Vietnam, to the extensive deltaic coastline along southern Papua in Indonesia. The region is also the global centre of mangrove diversity, with 51 species, or 71 per cent of the global total.
