ABSTRACT
The coastlines of southern China, Taiwan and the southern islands of Japan encompass the transition from tropical to temperate waters. Mangroves are discontinuous in their distribution and are marked by a latitudinal decline in diversity, from 26 species in Hainan Island to only one, Kandelia obovata, on Kyushu Island in Japan.
