ABSTRACT

The island continent of Australia is one of the world's major mangrove nations, with 6.6 per cent of the total global area. The most extensive mangroves are found in the wetter north and north-east of the country. Elsewhere, arid conditions prevail and many mangrove communities are tightly linked to adjacent saltmarshes and salt pans, regarded by many in Australia as a single ecological continuum (Wightman, 2006).
