ABSTRACT

Due to their size and isolation, marginalization and resource limitations, islands can face significant challenges for the sustainable development of tourism. These same characteristics, however, also offer good examples of how islands can utilize innovative coping mechanisms. The resourcefulness of people on islands displays the ability of these communities to be resilient. This is shown in the promotion of their social capital (Baldacchino, 2005; Scheyvens and Momsen, 2008), which includes leadership, forward planning and long-term vision, successful partnership development and adaptability.
