ABSTRACT

There is almost an unwritten rule of books such as this one that we shouldn’t discuss personal ethics, and stick to ‘the business case for sustainability’ as laid out in Chapters 1 and 2. But it is clear that many of the business leaders who are leading in this space are driven by a clear sense of morality. Most of the interviewees in this book talk about bringing their personal values to their place of work. In the cases of InterfaceFLOR and Marks & Spencer, the drive came from the Chief Executives, Ray Anderson and Sir Stuart Rose, wanting to do the right thing. For companies such as BOSS Paints, EAE Ltd, Procter & Gamble and Arup, an ethical dimension was built in from the very start. Other notable examples of ethical business leaders include Sergey Brin and Larry Page of Google, the late Anita Roddick of The Body Shop and Richard Reed, Adam Balon and Jon Wright of Innocent Drinks.
