ABSTRACT

We saw in Chapter 5 that we are exceeding the carrying capacity of the Earth, and a minority of the world’s population are responsible for the excess. While the majority’s impact on the planet is relatively small per person, this can be attributed to poverty rather than ‘green living’. This situation is clearly unsustainable: keeping the majority of the world’s population in poverty is immoral, but if they follow the industrialized nations’ model of development, the Earth will not be able to cope. So we need a completely different solution: sustainability.
