ABSTRACT

The refurbishment of housing takes place for a variety of reasons, and whether a comprehensive refurbishment or a partial one is planned, the same basic principles discussed in this chapter will apply. The normal reasons that refurbishment takes place include general upgrading, changes and additions, replacement of old equipment or improving comfort, and the principles of sustainable refurbishment can be applied to, and included in, almost any action. When all of these interventions are added together, they can move the dwelling towards the goal of overall sustainability. Where a building is being completely refurbished, the opportunities normally exist to act on all areas and make the finished dwelling as sustainable as a new building built to the highest sustainable principles and practices. Where partial refurbishment is to be carried out, the work can contribute to an overall sustainability plan for the building and be a stepping stone towards the ultimate sustainability goal.
