ABSTRACT

Most single-family housing is owner occupied, but may be privately rented or owned by social housing organizations. The drivers for and process of refurbishment may be different; but the principles and physical details will be the same. There are many reasons why work on an

individual house takes place – for example, to repair faults, for general maintenance, to make improvements, to stop rising damp, to adapt a newly acquired house, to convert a loft or other space, or just to replace an antiquated kitchen or bathroom.While these all provide the opportunity to make the dwelling more sustainable, there are many reasons why owners may not undertake comprehensive refurbishment or may not include sustainability, including the following:
