ABSTRACT

Sustainable refurbishment implies that houses should provide comfortable and low-carbon living space for many years, and this could well mean for several different occupiers over the years. Ideally, refurbishment should be designed with the needs and capabilities of the occupiers in mind to enable and encourage them to live sustainably. In reality, different occupiers have varying expectations and needs in terms of what temperatures are considered comfortable, hours of occupation, ventilation rates, equipment, and so on, and they also have different lifestyles. While most of the refurbishment measures included in this book are beneficial for all occupiers, it is worthwhile planning a refurbishment to meet any specific needs of the most common group of occupants.
