ABSTRACT
Calculating energy use in existing dwellings is an essential tool when deciding which elements of low-carbon refurbishment to include and what levels are needed to achieve an overall standard. Calculation methods have to use standard occupancy and weather conditions, and actual energy use when the building is occupied is likely to vary considerably. However, calculation methods provide a basis for rational comparison between options under typical conditions and should always be used when planning a sustainable refurbishment.
