ABSTRACT

Jared Diamond's first popular book- The Third Chimpanzee- was published in 1991. Like Guns, Germs, and Steel, it was a book intended for a general audience. In The Third Chimpanzee, Diamond focuses on the roots of human behavior in our evolutionary history. Diamond's most significant work after Guns, Germs, and Steel was Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Survive in 2005. While The Third Chimpanzee focused on evolution and Guns, Germs, and Steel focused on environments in which societies emerge, Collapse focused on what happens once societies are formed. In all his writing, Diamond has demonstrated his ability to weave together information from a diverse spectrum of disciplines and explain it to a broad readership. Guns, Germs, and Steel made Jared Diamond a household name and continue to be the most widely recognized of his works.
