ABSTRACT

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois The Souls of Black Folk is a collection of 14 essays written over seven years, so it naturally addresses a number of secondary themes. Two of the most important are contained in "On the Dawn of Freedom" and "Of the Faith of Our Fathers". The book "Of the Faith of our Fathers" describes the history and influence of the black Church in America and how religion had shaped, and was still shaping, African American culture and resistance. In his essay "On the Dawn of Freedom", Du Bois makes one main argument: that despite claims that the Civil War began over issues of how much power each individual state should have compared to the Union. Du Boiss work has had an enduring impact on race and ethnicity studies, as well as on post-colonial scholarship, which analyzes the material and cultural legacies of European colonialism.
