ABSTRACT

The secondary ideas relate to the consequences of a lack of harmony between formal organizations and mature individuals. What distinguishes them from the core concepts is their focus on individual behaviors and actions. The themes are integral to the dilemma of how managers will meet individual needs and organizational demands in a sustainable way that goes against neither human nature nor organizational goals. The solution lies in building an organization that enables individual freedom of expression without sacrificing organizational goals. Chris Argyris advocated the establishment of a flatter organizational system that facilitates information exchange up and down all levels of an organization, regardless of individual positions or seniorities. "The Individual and Organization" was a major contribution to the evolution of organizational behavior and employee relations theories. One major aspect of the text which is of potential significance for organization and management theory appears to have been overlooked.
