ABSTRACT

Chris Argyris's "The Individual and Organization: Some Problems of Mutual Adjustment" was published as a short article in 1957. This article noted that the potential of learning and feedback in the organizational decision-making process was largely ignored. Argyris articulated a double-loop learning model for providing feedback and more effective decisionmaking. The evident consistency throughout Argyris's work suggests he was a mature thinker even at the initial stages of his professional development. Argyris challenged the ways in which organizations are managed. His principles on how organizational structures can be improved are widely acknowledged and regarded as highly practical. Argyris attempted to achieve the generalization and replicability that support a successful theory. Therefore, "The Individual and Organization" possessed undisputed practicality as organizations started to play an important role in the maturation of individual workers. "The Individual and Organization" is regarded as a great contribution to behavioral management science and a core work in the field of organizational learning.
