ABSTRACT

The main secondary idea in William H. Whyte's The Organization Man is that changes in business environments impact suburban development. Whyte notes that the organizational changes he described have occurred in academic and scientific research environments as well. He also writes on the impacts organizational changes have had on relationships, families, and leisure time. He describes the newly-built communities that house them and their families, and they ways in which their design further supports many of the central themes of the book. Whyte also described, and mapped, some of the patterns of social interaction in these communities and noted how they supported a stable, middle-class upbringing for children in good school districts and fostered a certain type of community engagement that focused primarily on church groups and civic service. The life of the "Organization Wife" is a necessary component of the overall "Organization" lifestyle.
