ABSTRACT

Dynamic Capabilities is a seminal work that has had a strong impact in the strategic management field and enjoys a growing popularity across disciplines. David J. Teece draws mostly with three approaches: the resource based view of the firm, the competitive forces approach, and game theory. Alternative perspectives are offered by organizational capability theory, contractual theory and industrial analysis. Teece published his book Dynamic Capabilities and Strategic Management in 2010 after more than two decades of researching and publishing in the field of strategic management. When developing the dynamic capability framework, David Teece interacts mostly with three approaches: the resource based view of the firm, the competitive forces approach and game theoretic models. Teece challenges in particular the static nature of the resource-based view of the firm. Teece's Dynamic Capabilities is part of a long-standing debate in strategy and management science concerning the origins of a company's sustainable competitive advantage and performance.
