Why aren’t these markets just like the market for broccoli, with no cause for public concern? After all, there are markets for all the recyclables being collected in the sense that these recycled materials are all being sold to someone. Well, almost all. Occasionally we hear of recycled materials that are sold at a negative price, which means that someone has to be paid to haul them away. Even more shocking, we sometimes hear of materials collected for recycling that end up in the landfill. Indeed, if they would “earn” a large enough negative price from being recycled, there is a good case for sending them to a landfill.
