ABSTRACT

This book was planned as a journey. The expedition began with the use of tests in society. We then wandered through the history and technology of standardised testing, and into approaches to classroom assessment and criterion-referenced testing. We then travelled through the process of designing, creating, trying out, scoring, evaluating, administering and using language tests; not forgetting alignment and accountability. Along the way we stopped to take in the sights, marvel at great achievements and question some of the more dubious test uses and consequences.
