ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 is a pre-history of Korean Protestantism. The narrative begins with the possible introduction of the Church of the East (the Nestorian Church) to the Korean Peninsula in earlier times and moves to the beginning of the Catholic Church in late eighteenth-century Korea. The two sections succinctly but comprehensively cover the birth, growth, suffering, and perseverance of the first Catholic community in Korea. They also address the characteristics and culture of the Catholic community and the unfolding political situation in Korea before the coming of Protestantism.
