ABSTRACT

The Great Revival of 1907 was one of the greatest historical events in the history of Korean Protestantism. I first explain the sociopolitical background of the Great Revival. The devastating effects of the Sino–Japanese War and the Russo–Japanese War receive due attention. The narrative explains how the two wars resulted in a dramatic increase of converts, and how missionaries endeavored to take advantage of the political turmoil for propagating Christianity. After a detailed description and critical assessment of the Great Revival, I describe its enduring effects that fundamentally changed the character of mainstream Korean Protestantism—the birth of an emotional, revivalistic Protestantism.
