ABSTRACT

Even though the majority of Korean Protestants embraced a revivalistic Protestantism, many Protestant intellectuals chose a different path. Thus, Korean Protestantism was divided into two different streams: the popular revivalistic Protestantism and the Protestant nationalism. The latter wanted to relate their Christian faith to the political destiny of the nation. Against the increasing Japanese aggression, they became Christian nationalist activists. This chapter tells their story. It deals with the birth of Christian nationalism, the nationalist activities at the time of the Protectorate Treaty of 1905, and the crisis and further development of the Christian nationalist movement after the Great Revival.
