ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the remainder of the Japanese visit following the finalization of the joint statement (including the signing ceremony itself) and the efforts of both sides to justify the normalization of relations domestically. In the case of China, this involved both a massive public relations campaign and an effort to secure buy in from the Gang of Four (Zhou Enlai’s primary domestic rivals). As Japan recognizing Beijing led to the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with Taiwan, Tanaka and Ōhira had to contain a backlash from their party’s pro-Taiwan faction. Particular attention is paid to Ōhira’s careful announcement that the Japanese government was terminating the Treaty of Taipei and the subsequent Taiwanese response.
