ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the third day of Prime Minister Tanaka’s visit. While much of the language of the agreement between China and Japan had been settled by this point, the language concerning the exchange of ambassadors and Japan’s apology for the war had not yet been finalized. Other notable events of the day included a brief discussion of the Senkaku Islands (islands in the East China Sea under the de facto control of Japan but claimed by China and Taiwan) between Tanaka and Zhou Enlai and a late meeting between Tanaka and Mao. The emphasis of this chapter is placed on Zhou’s political leadership and his skillful management of domestic Chinese politics.
