ABSTRACT

The goal of performance management is to ensure employees’ activities and outputs contribute to the organization's goals. The performance management system is a planned, systematic approach for improving the efficiency of an individual, a team, or an organization. Performance standards and objectives, employee feedback, and performance assessment are the subsystems that make up the overall system. Performance objectives linked to the business plan should be decided for each department and individual. Coaching and feedback are essential parts of performance management. The successful implementation of performance appraisal is affected by the philosophy and strategy of management, performance criteria and standards, how the system is established, the methods used to appraise performance, the link between rewards and performance, and the training of appraisers. An appraisal should not be seen as a once-per-year exercise to fill out rating forms. Each subordinate should hold an appraisal interview with their manager to discuss his or her appraisal and to set objectives for the appraisal period that is coming up.
