ABSTRACT
In Chapter 3 the experience of temporality while drawing is examined in terms of holding, losing, and perceiving time. I suggest that we are motivated to draw as a way of holding what time will inevitably consume. A drawing from observation holds many moments of looking and yet appears to be one moment. While drawing my sister, I notice that I have lost track of time, leading to a reflection on how, while drawing, time is both suspended and passes quickly. While drawing, one feels profoundly in the present but also has access to a remembered past and an imagined future. Things and persons are seen as if for the first time, and we perceive the traces of time in the subjects we draw. Each of these facets of drawing time is developed with instances from my own and others’ experiences.
